The Platinum Medal winners are the cream of the crop in the view of the judges. They set an arbitrary but tough limit – the top 1% based on the highest final score over two rigorous judging reviews. So with over 1,850 entries this year they have 18 Platinums. This is regardless of category, style or varietal. With this approach they hope to shine the light on what Canada, and our best winemakers, are doing exceptionally well.
Here is what we are tasting from this years Platinum Award Winners:
Bench 1775 Semillon 2016
The wine is pungent with green herbal and citrus notes. From our warmer vineyard in Oliver, the wine is full bodied and more tropical in expression. Blending together gives the best of both expressions resulting in a wine best enjoyed with food. Pair with dark fish, roasted or bbq chicken and pork, or spring vegetables cooked in butter.
Stag’s Hollow Albarino 2017
The nose shows vibrant notes of ripe tropical and stone fruit, along with mandarin orange and desert sage. It also hints at a biscuity character that is likely derived from the wine’s extended lees contact. The mango, guava and peach flavours from the nose carry through to the palate. It is bright, yet texturally-rich and creamy, with mouthwatering acidity and a long, clean, mineral-driven finish.
NKMIP QQ Chardonnay 2016
Aromas of vanilla, hazelnut, marzipan and pear. The pear continues on to the palate, along with intense flavours of clove and butterscotch from the oak aging. The wine has a lush, creamy texture with nicely structured tannins that lead to a long and elegant finish.

Le Vieux Pin Syrah Cuvee Violette 2016
Cuvée Violette, as the name suggests, displays the perfumed and floral side of this noble grape variety. The palate is silky smooth thanks to a gentle co-ferment with about 1% Roussanne. The focus is on the feminine and graceful qualities of Syrah coming to the foreground. In the cellar we kid around and call this wine a syrah for Pinot Noir lovers. Wild mountain herbs and flowers mingle with pepper and spice. Red bramble fruits burst on the nose and on the palate.
Thornhaven Syrah 2015
This Syrah has aromas of blackberry, cherry, vanilla and cloves. This is a rich, medium-bodied red that can be paired with beef tenderloin, lamb or Tuscan-style pork roast.
