2018 Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in Wine Platinum Medal
Black Hills Viognier 2016
This delicate wine opens up with gorgeous lemon, chamomile and pear aromas that almost float out of the glass. The first sip reveals more Okanagan stone fruit character with lemon notes that carry through. It’s lovely acidity and floral make it a lovely pairing for seafood dishes but it is also perfect on its own.
Black Swift Oak Street Chardonnay 2014
You sense that from the acidity that greets you right off the top, and freshness that continues throughout. The fruit is a mix of clones 53, 76 and 96, adding more complexity to the palate. The wine is aged in new French puncheons for 14 months. The nose is a mix of aromatic pears, orange spice, melon and apples. The palate is similar with more red apple and citrus and a touch of oaky bitterness.
Quail’s Gate Reserve Old Vines Foch 2016
This Foch is dark and brooding with intense aromas of black fruit, coffee, spice and hints of toasty oak. On the palate, the wine is rich and full bodied with lively tannins and a long finish. We suggest pairing with grilled game meat, smoked brisket or hearty braised red meats.
Perseus Invictus 2015
Blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Cellar this wine for up to 8 years, or enjoy the well structured tannins and earthy notes with a great steak this winter.
This wine bursts out of the bottle with concentrated aromas of black cherry, truffle and shades of pencil lead which lead into an opulent yet well structured wine of impressive complexity. Flavours here straddle both old world and new, with boysenberry, anise and dark chocolate hints.
Black Hills Nota Bene 2016
The 2016 is easily the most elegant Nota Bene so far, no doubt aided by a very controlled 13.5 alcohol. Certainly, it's fresher upfront and brighter, but still with some stingy spice and wild herbs that punctuate its red and black current flavours, finishing with savoury, south Okanagan sage and resiny graphite notes. Lay this down for five years if you can wait.
