Exploring Zweigelt Wines

This wine has deep, rich red colours that look stunning in a glass. This grape was developed in 1922 by Fritz Zweigelt when he crossed the grapes Saint-Laurent and Blaufrankisch; the product was a black-skinned grape variety that is used to produce red wine. It’s most notably grown throughout Austria, but in recent years several plantings have emerged throughout Canada.

Zweigelt produces a deep, rich, red-coloured wine. It has delicious flavours of spiced cherry and raspberry. It has good acidity with a slightly spicy finish. Zweigelt is unique in that it is used to produce an array of wines. It is very popularly used in varietal wines, but it’s also used to produce sweet wines and some very high-end Icewine.

Mt. Boucherie Zweigelt Rose 2017

An elegant yet playful dance upon your palate of strawberries and fresh cut watermelon, with a crisp mineral finish.

Arrowleaf Zweigelt 2016

On the bouquet it shows abundant black cherry, plum, coffee and clove aromas. The taste is medium bodied with rich fruit, spice and vanilla flavours lingering on the finish. Pair with tomato-sauce based pastas, roast lamb or smoked sausage cassoulet.

Upper Bench Zweigelt 2015

This is a nice, light red that is naturally low in tannins and histamines (good for those who get headaches from red wine). Our Zweigelt is tasty when served slightly chilled, making it a great red for summer. The 2016 Zweigelt displays aromas of blueberry, red cherry, rum raisin and toffee with flavours of cedar, plum, clove and strawberry.

Arrowleaf Summerstorm 2017

This brut sparkling Rosé has aromas of strawberry, rhubarb and pink grapefruit. On the palate the aromas are intensified with a touch of sweetness before a refreshingly clean and dry finish. 100% Zweigelt.
